About Me

My Beginnings

I began learning violin under the tutelage of Richard Davies (Suzuki method), in early 1995.

My first public performance was in April 1997. I first joined a school Choir in late 1997 and successfully auditioned for the Australian Girls Choir in August 1998.

Public performances followed at Elder Hall in June 1999 and at the Adelaide Festival Theatre in December 1999 where I also sang as member of a quartet.

I first started playing Violin in orchestras in 2001 but my instrument focus changed to Viola in 2003.

I began formal voice lessons with Mrs Norma Hunter in 2002 and continued with her until her retirement in 2007.

In 2001 I was able to hire my first gurdy and though this had a plastic lute-back I grew to love the instrument and its enormous repertoire. In 2002 I took delivery of my first real gurdy, a beautiful lute-back, called Isobel, from Tim Guster.

Now

In 2005 Barb Dwyer came to Adelaide and I was privileged to spend workshop time with her learning new techniques in gurdy and vocalisation.

Being asked to perform at Woodford Folk Festival was a major stepping stone for me. Though I had attended WOMADelaide many times this was my first opportunity on "the other side". I enjoyed the experience, being treated as an equal by so many professional, much more experienced musicians.

My recent acquisition of Nyckelharpa and an Hardanger Fiddle has developed a strong interest in Nordic music.

My Vision

I don't know where my musical journey will lead me. Every step I take inspires me in different ways and manifests in the music I create. I enjoy performing repertoire from medieval through classical to contemporary but I am at my best when improvising.
